The onboarding process can be intimidating for fresh hires and training staff alike. What is the most effective way to smoothly integrate these people into your team? How do you prevent new employees from becoming overwhelmed? How do you ensure communication is clear and open?

1. Keep everything as simple as possible. Avoid overloading them on their first day. Keep it light.
2. Don’t forget to help them understand the office culture. Explain any inside jokes, but also teach them about your company’s mission and code of ethics. A word of advice: try to avoid a “sales pitch” tone: employees may begin to think that you’re trying to hide a negative aspect of the job or corporation.
3. Expand the onboarding program from three days to a full week. This will give both you and your new team members breathing room. Don’t rush: you want to ensure that all topics are covered and understood.
4. Before your new hires enter the door, have a fully detailed lesson plan set and ready to go. Make sure everything is in order for training, no matter what’s going on elsewhere. If your business is in a transition period (perhaps shifting to new software or restructuring the departments) explain that the team is undergoing a change, but that this is a good opportunity to learn alongside everyone else.
5. Ensure that your training is unique to your company. You don’t want generic training materials that could apply to any other company in your industry. Make sure your corporate identity infuses your training program.
6. We can’t stress this enough- use a Learning Management System. The right system will incorporate instructor training, mobile support, and plenty of other innovative features. A proper LMS can save you hours of work and your company thousands of dollars.
Keeping these six ideas in mind, your new hire will join the team quickly and have a firm understanding of his or her new responsibilities. Studies show that onboarding is one of the most critical times of an employee’s career, so make it count!
