Who Are Job Influencers?

Whether it’s a health resolution, a fashion choice or a corporate decision, people want to see the end result of the path they are considering. More importantly, they need someone they trust to guide them along the way. With the soaring role of social media influencers in people’s lives, this need has become even more clear.
Job influencers, or work mentors, are experienced and trusted individuals in the same industry who guide employees through their career paths and support their corporate journey. Work mentors’ perspectives are tremendously valuable, not only due to their specialized knowledge and background, but because of their encouragement and support of employees’ best interests.
Mentors are not necessarily role models, but they can be. Unlike role models, mentors do not always have to be those we aspire to be. Instead, they are professionals whose experience and communication guide us through many aspects of our personal, and professional, lives.

Why Do We Need Them?

Today, networking and communicating with senior people in the same industry has become considerably more valuable than before. In addition to being a great stepping stone to enter a new business realm through novel introductions and relationships, it is also a tool with which people learn about others’ career paths, including the twists and turns.
Mentors are not just for entry-level employees; regardless of how accomplished someone is, additional points of view tremendously impact the decision-making process. Whether it’s giving professional advice, or providing emotional support, mentors impact employees’ lives in a positive way. Their insightful knowledge helps employees strategically weigh their different options and make decisions. By sharing anecdotes of their own successes and failures, as well as the lessons learned from them, work mentors inspire employees to flourish in their careers and work toward their goals.

How Can They Help?

Given the tremendous, multi-faceted impact that influencers have on our lives, they do have various roles. Here are a few of the most important ones that are valued both personally and professionally:

Advise

Mentors use their experience and specialized knowledge to consult with employees, and offer them expert recommendations. In strong mentorship relationships, mentees communicate their needs and uncertainties, and can expect honest input from their mentors.

Discuss

Mentors should not feed solutions to employees. In addition to being a guiding counselor, this relationship offers a learning experience for employees as well. By weighing different options together and coming to effective conclusions, mentors decrease their mentees’ dependence on them and instill a sense of confidence.

Support

Oftentimes, employees do not do exactly what their mentors advise, which is, in fact, a positive sign, given that mentors provide consultation, and not instructions. Therefore, they must support these decisions and cheer on their mentees with great enthusiasm, in order to encourage their individual thinking and strengthen their confidence.
